Hi, I’m Dr. Roy

I’ve been working in the field of critical thinking for over three decades.

My work has always been focused on one core question:
How do we help people think more clearly, judge more carefully, and make better decisions in real-world situations?

Over the years, that work has taken many forms – teaching, training, assessment design, consultancy, writing, and speaking – across education, organisations, and public bodies in multiple countries.

My background

I’ve taught critical thinking at every level of education, from primary school through to higher education, including work in prison education.

I’ve worked with teachers and lecturers internationally, supporting them both in embedding critical thinking within their subjects and in teaching it as a discrete subject in its own right – an approach strongly supported by research as the most effective way to develop students’ critical thinking skills.

Alongside this, I’ve worked with organisations across a range of sectors, including finance, industry, and public services. This has included:

  • Staff and leadership training
  • Consultancy on programme design
  • Development of critical thinking assessments
  • Support with decision-making, reasoning, and judgement in complex contexts

Throughout my career, I’ve been particularly interested in the relationship between critical thinking and creativity, and in ensuring that critical thinking is both theoretically rigorous and practically applicable.

I’m the author of a number of books and articles on critical thinking, many of which are used internationally. My work has been widely adopted in education settings and has informed both teaching practice and assessment design in different countries.

I’ve also produced a wide range of learning materials and resources, often bespoke, designed to support the development of critical thinking skills in specific contexts.

Speaking

I’m regularly invited to speak at conferences, events, and internal programmes for organisations and education audiences.

My talks focus on:

  • Critical thinking and judgement
  • Decision-making under uncertainty
  • Showing how creative thinking is an essential part of critical thinking
  • The implications of AI for human thinking and judgement

I aim to make these sessions practical, engaging, and grounded in real-world examples.

Critical thinking in the age of AI

More recently, my work has expanded into the field of AI and critical thinking.

I’m collaborating with Magif.ai to develop AI Critical Thinking Coaches – tools designed to support better thinking, judgement, and decision-making in real time.

Rather than replacing human thinking, these tools are intended to:

  • Help clarify options
  • Challenge assumptions
  • Explore alternative scenarios
  • Support better reasoning and judgement

This work reflects a long-standing interest of mine: how we preserve and strengthen human judgement in increasingly complex, technology-driven environments.

How I work

I don’t offer off-the-shelf solutions.

Everything I do – whether training, consultancy, assessment design, speaking, or AI work – is shaped around:

  • The people involved
  • The context they’re working in
  • The kinds of decisions and judgements they need to make

My aim is always the same: to help people think more clearly and act more confidently in situations that genuinely matter.

If you’re exploring training, consultancy, assessment design, speaking, or the use of AI tools to support critical thinking, I’m happy to have an initial conversation.
